I'm in search. In search of a hobby. Maybe you can help. I was thinking about doing the whole train thing, but in doing some research, that looks like it can get pretty doggone expensive. I don't want to knit or sew or crochet. And while some might say that I've taken TV watching to the hobby level, I will respectfully disagree and say that that is more of a pasttime than a hobby.
Reading? Well, I do like to read, but that's not really a hobby, is it? I have a stamp collection that I could take up again but I don't think that that is going to quench my hobby thirst.
I need to find something like wood burning. Or whittlin'. Or creating a creature down in my subterranean laboratory from the body parts of the dead. You, know. That sort of thing.
Haha! I'm just kidding about that last part. I really don't have any interest in wood burning.
So how about you? Got a hobby? Any recommendations?

Stained glass is fun and seems like something you would be good at Plus you could make Empresss lots of things she would love.
There's also skiing and paintball guns but I consider a hobby someting you can do in the garage. Better stick with the glass.
Have fun!

I think all men should have auto repair/restoration, gardening, and furniture building as hobbies. It seems only fair since we women have housework, cooking, and child care as "hobbies."

Posted by: Kris at January 6, 2006 09:31 AMI don't have a single suggestion - but will be checking back later today to see what your more creative commenters have to say.
Posted by: cas at January 6, 2006 09:51 AMWhat possible reason could you want to have a hobby for? I mean, really, do you have that much spare time and money? I'll bet the Empress could find LOTS of things for you to do. I've got friends who do these things -- woodcarving, stained glass, various collections, sewing, flower arranging -- and all of them have spouses saying "Hey, *I* can keep you busy."
As someone who's turned a group of hobbies into a (barely struggling by) business, let me warn you -- DON'T DO IT. Since I doubt that will work, here's another suggestiong -- check at your local Michael's Crafts or JO-Anne's or whatever craft/hobby shops you have and take some classes. They usually have a raft of them. This means you can take a stab at something under supervision and with minimal monetary outlay.
Most anything can be a hobby, tho, if it does the following:
1) Provide an excuse not to do anything you are supposed to around the house, as in "Just a minute, Hon, as soon as I finish this."
2) Remove from your available income the amount each momth equivalent to going out with spouse to dinner and a live theatreical performance twice (to an actual restaurant, the kind with cloth napkins and waitresses with teeth)
3) Occupy one half of the dining room table, take over a spare room, or require a special room to be added.
4) Produce several half completed objects at which you will stare guiltily but which the TV will always win over OR several finished objects that will have all friends and relatives living in dread of birthdays or other gift giving opportunities.
5) Gives you ample opportunity to injure yourself or damage household goods/the house itself.
ANything that creates dust is even more special ;>

Posted by: Jeff A at January 6, 2006 10:22 AMYou could become a practical joker.
Posted by: keith at January 6, 2006 10:58 AMI personally, enjoy playing/learning about video games. It keeps changing and is a HUGE field.
Beyond that, I think maybe the coolest hobby would be to build and collect (ones that you build) -- Radio Controlled Cars. Build the cars. Drive around the cars. Repeat. Move onto harder things, like boats or planes or Helicopters. Just think of it. You'd be the coolest person on the block ... still. But at least for something good, you know, not that other thing.... (j/k)
Posted by: The Elder Boy at January 6, 2006 11:35 AMyou could come over and paint my house.
:)
PeteBeck can afford to hire a damn painter now that he is RICH.
Come paint MY house.
Posted by: KathyHowe at January 6, 2006 12:59 PMYou have a lot of good suggestions there. But, I wouldn't give up on the train thing if I were you.
I do it on the cheap myself. Part of the fun/interest for me is to see how realistic I can make it with common items (read: unexpensive, non-hobby-shop-priced items).
It takes years to get a layout worthy of the magazines- if not decades. I have been doing it for about 5 years now and have accumulated enough stuff to have a passable layout that the kids can enjoy.
Good luck!
Posted by: Charmless at January 6, 2006 01:52 PMMy comment was right there along the lines of similarity with Kris and P until Kathy Howe's popped up.
Maybe a nice wood building hobby, I could use a new deck?
Posted by: Diane at January 6, 2006 02:33 PMWould playing video games be considered a hobby?
Posted by: Plain Jane at January 6, 2006 03:02 PMI gotta agree with JeffA...photography. That's my hobby and its something I picked up from my dad.
It gives you an exuse to go to exotic places to take pics!
Posted by: Meeta at January 6, 2006 04:18 PMPhotography. Although really, I think you should give knitting a chance - it is so soothing and fun at the same time. Plus you will be popular because everyone loves a man that can knit!
Posted by: Christine at January 7, 2006 02:21 AMWe roast our own coffee beans and collect vaccum brewer coffee pots. Umm, I think we have enough pots - unless one of the special ones comes along. However, we have learned alot, realized we still have a lot to learn all the while enjoying some damn good coffee.
Posted by: fran at January 7, 2006 08:50 AM1. Were you thinking about making your own wine ?
2. How about your own beer ?
3. You could always just fish more.
4. Not really a "hobby", but how about volunteering? There's diverse groups all around you who could probably use your help.
