Calvin, we hardly knew ye

I'll tell you what's disappointing. Comic strips. Remember "back in the day" when comic strips were funny? BC, The Wizard of ID, Sally Forth (ok, maybe not Sally Forth), Andy Capp, Peanuts. They were pretty good way back when. They didn't hit a home run every time but they were fairly dependable. They were at least fun to read.

Nowadays? Well, they are still dependable. Dependably awful! Have you read any of this tripe lately? I don't even think that they are trying anymore. Don't believe me? Here, go to comics.com and find me something funny. I dare you.

Ever since Gary Larson stopped doing The Far Side, it seems that all of the comic strips lost their funny. And Larson stopped over TEN YEARS AGO (the same year that Calvin and Hobbes stopped being a regular strip, bytheway)! Now, maybe I'm wrong. Maybe there are fresh, funny comic strips out there and I have just missed the boat. Is that the case?

Seriously (if you'll pardon the anti-pun)! Are there any decent comic strips left?

I read Pearls Before Swine, Dilbert, Unshelved, Get Fuzzy and some web comics (like White Ninja). Also check out the Comics Curmudgeon!

I really like Frazz... of course, rumor has it that Bill Watterson is the one doing it under a pseudonym, so that's probably why I like it so much.

Get Fuzzy, little-gamers.com, Pearls before Swine, PvP (Player vs. Player), and Unfit are the ones in my Bloglines feed at the moment.

Cheers.

Doonesberry is hysterical. If you are a sucker for animals, then Mutts and Red and Rover are great as well.

Posted by: Pixie at January 5, 2006 11:08 AM

frazz and get fuzzy are both awesome.

I'm a big Chickweed Lane fan, so much that I've bought strips on T-shirts. Pearls before Swine has moments, although sometimes it's just mean. In independent web strips, I read PvP, Devil's Panties, Something Positive, even Sluggy Freelance. My regular morning reading also includes Pibgorn (which is more of a graphic novel forced into strip form, but it's got a succubus as a main character). Rose is Rose has the occasionally funny (not so much anymore -- the older ones have made me fall over).

Ya just got to expand, Buzz. Ucomics, and the indies, are good sources.

One word:

Dilbert.

The one daily newspaper comic strip that I make a point to read every day is Foxtrot. I don't know that it's continuously knee-slapping funny, but it's the only one I enjoy on a consistent basis.

The other two daily reads for me are both web comics.

For Better for Worse is still one of my all time favorites. Maybe not always funny, but always dependable.

Posted by: statia at January 5, 2006 12:27 PM

I think these may both be funnier for women but I'm a huge fan of Foxtrot and For Better or For Worse. Of course, I've grown up with them so I may just be conditioned to find them funny. Hmm...must go ponder on that.

The good ones aren't in the newspaper. They're online. Dork Tower, Nodwick, Cat and Girl, Penny Arcade, Ctrl+Alt+Del...

Posted by: Solonor at January 5, 2006 01:01 PM

"get fuzzy" is funny.

Posted by: Alicia at January 5, 2006 02:38 PM

Dude, I love you more when you don't go away.

Now to catch up on what I've been missing...

Posted by: zee at January 5, 2006 03:34 PM

Amen Buzz! I miss Calvin so much. My regulars are Dork Tower and Foxtrot.

Posted by: Orion at January 5, 2006 06:46 PM

I like Mutts. Unfortunately, they don't run it in the Charlotte paper. I anxiously await each new book at Barnes and Noble. Get Fuzzy is okay for me, and I like Pearls Before Swine, but nothing has ever done it for me like Calvin and Hobbes. I'm still a big Bloom County / Outland / Opus fan, but one strip a week isn't enough.

Posted by: keith at January 5, 2006 08:08 PM

I like Get Fuzzy, Non Sequitur, Ballard Street, Citizen Dog ... even Baby Blue is funny half the time ... the problem with comics isn't lack of funny or fresh, it's presentation. The papers are printing them so much smaller, the artists can't draw anything creative. That's why Watterson quit drawing Calvin, or so he said.

Posted by: Kyle at January 6, 2006 01:07 AM

Remember when it was Bloom County and really funny? Yeah, me, too.

Far Side was one of my faves. (Close to Home is a riot akin to Gary Larson). And Calvin is my youngest child. I'd like to think she takes after me. (In fact, we call her Calvin and she's actually got a tan-ish Hobbes.)

Ah, the mem'ries. Back in the day indeed.

THE LOCKHORNS!!!

Calvin & Hobbes will forever and always be my favorite [and that's saying a lot given my abhorrence of absolutes].

There is a dog strip that's caught my eye, although it's still a far cry from C&H.

Of course, the actual site location escapes me now. Damnit.

I'll be back with the URL later!

i love calvin and hobbes...

now if you don't mind something totally un- PC check out Boondocks. I laugh because its so wrong.

and Get Fuzzy is funny too :)

Posted by: Meeta at January 6, 2006 04:20 PM

I like Boondocks, still read Doonsbury, get C&H reruns delivered by email daily.

I'll have to check out some of the web cartoons y'all are raving about.

Posted by: ben at January 9, 2006 12:53 PM

I skip most of the others, but read the boondocks daily.

My dad worked at the local newspaper for 20+ years. The perks was that he would bring the Saturday comics (small town paper, no Sunday print) home on Thursday before press day. One time he even asked for our favorites and within a month, some of the ones we didn't like were gone. Now a days? My kids don't give a hoot about comics in the paper, and that's sad.
