Over 500 years ago, our four (could have been five, not too sure about that one) fathers set out on this day to provide their new-fangled, upper-crusty, fancy-schmancy foodstuffs to the local aborigines. They provided hot dogs, hamburgers, two kinds of potato salad (they couldn't decide on just one) and some lovely pies. They taught the locals (or "townies" as they were called back then) that this was the day that they should open their pools. They taught that this was the day that everyone could start wearing white shoes again. Why, they even threw a little parade. Thus was born Memorial Day. A day we still celebrate by overeating and working extremely hard at not working. What a grand holiday!
See isn't history fun??!
Oh, by the way, there are a few other versions of what this day is REALLY all about. If you feel that you must, you can read all about them right here.
Have fun, folks. And, on a serious note, please take a moment to remember those brave men and women who have given their lives so that you and I can enjoy the freedom we enjoy day in and day out. Bless them all!
Posted by Buzz at May 30, 2005 01:14 PMextra days off are great. :)
Posted by: Alicia at May 30, 2005 01:49 PMYes, PLEASE remember why you are getting those extra days off!
Our troops Past and Present deserve to be remembered!
Posted by: Wendi at May 30, 2005 05:05 PMI don't know how I would have done in the military, but my guess is "not well." It takes a lot more guts, bravery, and fortitude than I've ever imagined myself having.
Aside from my normal Mon-Fri, I got to work on Saturday AND Today. But, I'm actually quite thankful I have a good job, and live in the good old USofA, in part thanks to guys like the Minutemen, and the Tuskegee Airmen, and Pat Tillman.
And I haven't been shot at or had to worry about land mines or RPGs at all this week, so I actually had a pretty good week, relatively. Thanks guys, for doing what you do !!
