Fifth de May

Well, it's Cinco de Mayo. Fifth of May. What a strange holiday. First of all let me tell you what this holiday is not. It is not Mexico's Independence Day. That is actually on September 16th. No, Cinco de Mayo is a celebration of the Mexican victory over the French in the city of Puebla in 1862. It is celebrated in that city with wild abandon. It is celebrated regionally throughout Mexico with varying degrees of enthusiasm.

And then there's us. Americans. What a crazy lot we are, eh?

We celebrate Cinco de Mayo like there's no tomorrow! Like there won't be a Seis de Mayo. We eat tamales and tacos and enchiladas and salsa. Oh, how we love the salsa! We gulp massive amounts of margaritas. We throw "Mexican" parties with piñatas and great big hats and Mexican music with lots of horns and guitars.

You know, like all Mexican people do.

Man, we crack me up sometimes! Anyway, have a great day, folks. And have a mojita for me, won'tcha?

Some of us eat tamales and enchiladas and salsa and gulp pitchers of margaritas and wear great big hats and play Mexican( OK not Mexican, but Caribbean ) music all of the time, who needs to wait for May 5.

I'm more prone to celebrate when there are others here... today, I'm home alone ^_^. Tomorrow, however, my DH is taking a vacation day ^_~. We're hoping to get the garden expansion done... and then a little early Mother's Day outing.

I think Seinfeld was the one that got us all pumped up about Cinco de Mayo. But I'm going for free burritos at Tios in just a few minutes! And Buzz, if today is Cinco de Mayo, tomorrow must be ECF...Donald

Gee, we usually eat birthday cake on el cinco de Mayo, since it happens to be my husband's birthday.

We will occasionally drink a Corona to celebrate, though.
