Humans (that's us) have such incredibly middlin' tolerances. For example, it just doesn't take much for our shower water to be too hot or too cold. And how about body temp? 98.6. That's the deal. You vary that temperature 5 degrees up or down and you'll probably wake up in the hospital. Vary it by 10 degrees and you'll probably wake up dead! It's all very fragile.
I've been thinking about this type of stuff for a while now. Why? Well, my wife recently got some tough news from the doctor and we've had to make some lifestyle changes to try and fix things. She didn't get any 'you only have 12 days to live' news, but it was bad enough to put a little fear into her. So now we eat a lot of hay and straw. Well, low-fat, low-cal, hi-fib, low-sodium, low-carb, hi-protein straw anyway.
All this healthy living so that we can live longer has made me re-examine life a bit. Heady stuff, I know. Thinking about the fragility, the teensy tolerances, the actual shortness of life (in the grand scheme of things) has made me realize that while being born is a great trick, the actual miracle of life is life itself. It could, and sometimes does, end just like that (insert snap of fingers). Scary stuff. Sort of.
So with all this in mind, I say that you (and I) should all go out and enjoy this day. Say hi to people you wouldn't normally say hi to. Hug somebody (it's probably better to hug somebody you know. Less creepy.). Feel the sun on your face. Breathe in the air. Appreciate what you have.
Go ahead. Feel the miracle.

Posted by: Wendi at May 2, 2005 08:46 AMYes, yes, yes! As far as the diet goes, just remember that popular gospel hymn: "A body's just a body, passing the rye through."
Posted by: vicki at May 2, 2005 10:45 AMDamn it Buzz! I ran out and hugged some guy on the street and he clocked me!

Had this same reaction when a friend had a heart attack last year- now not only is he doing spectacularly well, losing weight and actually walking 10k races (!) but so are a lot of his friends (I'm not quite there with the 10k races, but I did lose 15lbs...) Best to you and Empress!
