Know what we really need? A 24 hour papal channel! Yeah! That would be fabulous! That way, I wouldn't have to settle for the measly 18 - 20 hours of coverage that I am being forced to accept. A 24 hour papal channel would allow me to see the same coverage of the cardinals walking oh-so-slowly another 6 or 7 hundred more times. And I could see the chimney. Again. And again. And maybe they could show me some more pictures of a crowd of people in Rome. Again. And yet again.
Now, I mean no disrespect to the Catholic religion. To each his own, I say. And I mean no disrespect to Catholics themselves. Why, some of my best friends are Catholics. All I am saying is
ENOUGH IS ENOUGH, ALREADY!!
Good grief! If I never see another news story on the death or election or life or background of the former/current/possible pope it will be a-ok with me. I'm ready to move on. Although, now that I think about it, there are certainly worse stories that could be splattered all over the news. Hmmm...maybe I shouldn't look a gift horse in the mouth.
By the way, if you've ever wondered about the amount of followers in all major religions (like I just did), here's a breakdown for you (these are close approximations as every list I read was a little bit different)
1. Christianity: 2 billion
2. Islam: 1.4 billion
3. Hinduism: 900 million
4. Secular/Nonreligious/Agnostic/Atheist: 850 million
5. Buddhism: 360 million
6. Chinese traditional religion: 225 million
7. primal-indigenous: 150 million
8. African Traditional & Diasporic: 95 million
9. Sikhism: 23 million
10. Juche: 19 million
11. Spiritism: 14 million
12. Judaism: 14 million
13. Baha'i: 5 million
14. Jainism: 4 million
15. Shinto: 4 million
16. Zoroastrianism: 3 million
17. Cao Dai: 3 million
18. Tenrikyo: 2.4 million
19. Neo-Paganism: 1 million
20. Unitarian-Universalism: 800 thousand
21. Rastafarianism: 600 thousand
22. Scientology: 500 thousand
I long for the good old days when a pope could be bought in. Then it didn't take this darn long!
Whatever happened to good old fashioned bribery or bullying?
Posted by: Jeff A at April 19, 2005 06:52 AMI blame the media. I don't mean any disrespect either, but yeah...enough is enough. The media seems to always blow things out of proportion, even though choosing a new Pope is big news, just let us know when it is done.
Have a great day!!
Posted by: Karen at April 19, 2005 06:55 AM23. Alcoholism (not the disease! The religion): At least one person I can think of.

Knowing the way our current administration likes to hide things behind other new stories, I can only imagine the ridiculous crap they may be pulling while we are "distracted" by the papal coverage... "Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain..."

Posted by: ktpupp at April 19, 2005 08:43 AMI am behind the times again and just found out you're back. Hurray!
Now if it really WERE Santa Claus who'd died, I'd understand the media coverage.
Posted by: Bluegrass Mama at April 19, 2005 08:44 AMI'm totally with you. I am following the story, but you know what? There are only so many angles that you can use to show a smoking chimney. And just to alleviate some of the boredom, I've taken to speculating on how many of the Cardinals are wearing Depends under them thar red robes.
Posted by: QC at April 19, 2005 09:52 AMi find it a little disturbing that
#1 - Scientology is listed as a "religion"
#2 - that 500 THOUSAND people "practice" the "religion"
I thought it was reserved for John Travolta and Tom Cruise (i.e. celebs who have lost all touch with reality!?!)
Posted by: liz at April 19, 2005 10:14 AMI agree. I'm sure all the Catholics have access to up-to-the-minute info about the future pope without his appointment being a major headline 24 times a day for weeks.
Posted by: Nanc' at April 19, 2005 10:15 AMConsidering that Catholics make up a small percentage of the 2 billion Christians in the world, you'd think the coverage would reflect that. It's all Pope, all the time. MSNBC has a live smoke Pope cam. It's crazy.
Posted by: mac at April 19, 2005 10:26 AMThat's it.
I'm opening the church of ass. We're going to elect our officials by having them moon the media.
Where's my camera?
Posted by: Sandra Bullock at April 19, 2005 10:50 AMI wonder if there's a live webcam feed anywhere of the chimney. Probably not due to the security of the vatican, from what I hear, you don't even have cell phone reception in there, but that would be cool.
Posted by: theMike at April 19, 2005 11:41 AMJust heard there's a new pope! So the news should be back to covering Michael Jackson all day instead by the end of the week.
(PS- missed ya Buzz, glad you're back!)
Posted by: annie at April 19, 2005 12:08 PMYou could always switch to one of those channels that has endless LAWRENCE WELK reruns.
Posted by: MJ at April 19, 2005 12:53 PMHave Faith...the new Pope has been chosen...now maybe...soon...we won't be inundated with the all-papal all the time news channel!
Posted by: Wendi at April 19, 2005 01:17 PMBuzz I agree with you but that's just the MEDIA world we live in. OJ/The War/Michael Jackson/Pope. Over and Over the same stuff.
I was checking out your religion list. You forgot your flock !
BUZZARDS - 50+ people
Soooo, the pope channel....would you get that through "Papal View?"
Get it?? Papal V....never mind.
This is why I'm boycotting the television until it's all over.

Posted by: karmajenn at April 19, 2005 02:25 PMI had a Catholic friend call me today and say, "They've picked a new Pope!" To be honest, I didn't know they were even looking. ;0P
Posted by: Kris at April 19, 2005 03:52 PMthat would be ... according to Dana... takes all the fun out if I have to explain it!
DAMN!

What happened to the Church of Buzz? Why wasn't THAT listed?
...Walks off all grumpy-like...
Posted by: don at April 19, 2005 04:32 PMI like the church of ass. Now that's interesting. Might even "moon"light to see what it's all about!
Posted by: Hula Doula at April 19, 2005 05:19 PMAhh. Those wacky Catholics. Electing a nazi. Will the fun and mayem ever end? And what's with electing another old dude? We'll be going through this again in 10 years. Geesh.
Posted by: Daisyhead at April 19, 2005 10:15 PMBoy, there sure are a lot of people on the planet these days, huh? Goes to show you how a few thousand years can really screw up a neighborhood. But at least we have religion; something we can all agree to disagree about. And if it weren't for Popestravaganza 2005, (no offense meant) just imagine how much more airtime the Jackson case would be getting.
Posted by: Kyle at April 20, 2005 03:54 AMRastafarianism - now that seems like something I could get into...
Like play good music, drink rum and smoke uhm... well nevermind - I don't have the hair for it anyway!
