Remember Charley Weaver? The old guy on the Hollywood Squares? About a million years ago? I loved that guy! Well, were he still alive, he would be turning 99 years old today. And here's the bit I just learned - he is Rosanna, David and Patricia Arquette's grandfather. His real name was Cliff Arquette and he was the only "regular" on Hollywood Squares to play a character other than himself. Weird, man! I guess if we're supposed to learn something new everyday, I can head on back to bed now. I done lernt me sumpthin'!!
Here's some classic Charley Weaver 'Hollywood Square' moments:
Peter Marshall: Charley, you've just decided to grow strawberries. Are you going to get any during your first year?
Weaver: Of course not, Peter. I'm too busy growing strawberries!
Peter Marshall: What makes water hard?
Charley Weaver: Winter.
Peter Marshall: True or false -- drinking can make you hard of hearing.
Charley Weaver: What?
Peter Marshall: If you're going to make a parachute jump, you should be at least how high?
Charley Weaver: Three days of steady drinking should do it.
Peter Marshall: When a couple have a baby, who is responsible for it's sex?
Charley Weaver: I'll lend him the car. The rest is up to him.
Wow! Maybe me and Charlie Weaver are related, but we don't wear the same clothes, I have my own!

Posted by: Karen at December 28, 2004 07:54 AMIs that Alice Cooper on the right?
Posted by: Tippecanoe at December 28, 2004 08:20 AMI used to LOVE watching that show when I was a kid! I just loved the funny one-liners from the celebrity squares!
See Buzzy, I don't think ALL TV is bad. Just what is on TV these days.
Posted by: Kathy Howe at December 28, 2004 09:55 AMGood ol' Charley Weaver. I had no idea he was the Arquette kids' grandfather - but now I do. I was just talking to work cohorts and posting about Patricia Arquette this very morn. Go figure.
I always liked Charley, too.
Thanks for the info and the funny moments, Buzz.
Posted by: Vickie at December 28, 2004 11:31 AMAt first, I thought you were talking about the older guy that had the brush cut (or flat top.) NOW, with the picture, I know EXACTLY who you are talking about. Boy, that WAS along time ago! Wasn't he on Hee-Haw, too?
Posted by: MJ at December 28, 2004 12:26 PMOh, I loved Hollywood Squares when I was young. Well, when I was permitted to watch television that was, the rest of the time I would pretend to play Hollywood Squares with my imaginary friend.
She was a silly girl and called it tic-tac-something. Proving of course that I was a child to be pitied: lack of television time AND imaginary friends that were a little less than bright.
Yes, we can pause to feel sorry for me.
Posted by: Michele at December 28, 2004 01:09 PMAwww Man. I used to LOVE that old man. I laughed out loud reading those old jokes. Thanks Buzz! xx Jenny
ps. I posted today about my recent celebrity crush.
Posted by: Jenny at December 28, 2004 01:26 PMWish I had it on hand, but I'll go from memory: My favority Charlie Weaver quip:
Peter Marshall: Charlie, which of your senses degrades the most as you age?
Charlie: My sense of decency.
That's some awesome stuff!
But now I feel old.
Posted by: Müzikdüde (John) at December 28, 2004 02:41 PMYea Tippecanoe, Charlie played bass in Alice Cooper's band.
Posted by: MIKE at December 28, 2004 03:24 PMThat is FABULOUS information! I just shared with my team and we're all really impressed with your knowledge of trivial things - we salute you, in fact.
