I have two strange weaknesses. Ok, I have many more than that but two is all you get today. These two happen to be TV weaknesses and although I know my friend Zoofy would say that ALL TV is a weakness, I'm going to stick with just these two for now.
Weakness #1 - I can't help stop channel surfing when I hit a Spanish speaking channel. And not just the way cool Spanish soap operas and variety shows (what's up with those, by the way?). Oh no. I'm talking about the American movies that have been dubbed over in Spanish. It's just too weird and wonderful for me to pass by. Show me the Spanish-ized version of Barefoot in the Park and it's like I'm hypnotized, man! And the answer to your obvious question is no, I do not speak a lick of Spanish.
Weakness #2 - The Lawrence Welk Show. I really have no defense for this one. If I had a dollar for everytime I stopped in my surfing on this Germerican saccharine version of American Bandstand I would have...ummm...well, a bunch of dollars, that's for sure. I, for whatever reason, love this show! It makes me smile. Sue me.
Ok, there you have it. I've bared my soul. Please be kind.
LOL! those are two of my weaknesses as well!
thankfully, i speak a tiny bit...(and understand more) of spanish, but i'm a SUCKER for the variety shows and forget it when i see a soap opera...they are just too good to surf past!
Posted by: jen at December 27, 2004 05:01 PMMy grandmother loved The Lawrence Welk Show, she made me watch it with her as a child. I can't say I have seen it sence.
Posted by: jenn at December 27, 2004 05:14 PMYesterday, I turned on the tv and was actually watching the Spanish-speaking version of HOMEWARD BOUND. Why? It was neat to hear the animals speak in Spanish. My kids thought I was weird and turned something else on.
As for Lawrence Welk, if I come across it, I stop and watch some of it. My husband doesn't understand this. It's a compulsion fr me...it reminds me of spending afternoons at my grandparents house. They always had Lawrence Welk on. I like to look at all the old clothing that they wore on that show...and the big hairdos! They had a Christmas special on the other day and some of his children's kids were singing Christmas songs...badly. I don't know...that show just brings back warm memories of my grandparents. My grandpa is in intensive care right now. Congestive heart failure. He'll be going into a nursing home next, as my grandma is in poor health and can't care for him. It feels like the end of an "era" to me.
Posted by: MJ at December 27, 2004 05:32 PMOK, well, I'm NOT admitting to being a Lawrence Welk watcher by any means...
...but I do remember one episode where one of the main singers (he was a handsome blonde guy..) forgot the words to the song, so he just stood there and sang la, la, la-dee-da, dee-da, la la, etc.
You could tell that he was mortified. So was I . I was hoping that LW would be kind to him and not bring it up.
No such luck.
Posted by: RisibleGirl at December 27, 2004 06:21 PMmy TV weakness is my parents TiVO! i will watch total crap on TV just to play with the TiVO.

Posted by: Tippecanoe at December 27, 2004 07:28 PMGuy and Rawlna all the way! That's what my parents say, anyway.
Posted by: dotbar at December 27, 2004 11:29 PMIt's ok, Buzz!
I like Barney, and Elmo!
I hope nobody sues me now, because that's not good!
Posted by: Rockchild at December 28, 2004 06:39 AMLW I can do without... but I once watched an hour of some Filipino morning show. It was like a train wreck... I couldn't look away. Every 5th word or so was English. Superweird.
Posted by: Iki at December 28, 2004 06:47 AMIt's almost impossible to pass any TV show where four men are wearing powder yellow suits and the women have pefrct hair and matching skirts, even if you just stop long enought to say "WTF?!?!"
Posted by: JJJJB at December 28, 2004 07:15 AMI LOVE the Lawrence Welk show! I used to watch it with my grandparents every night before I went to bed when I was visiting them in the summer. That little champagne bubble pop during the theme song makes me happy.
Posted by: QC at December 28, 2004 07:34 AMMy parents always watched The Lawrence Welk Show...drove me crazy when they performed a "popular" song! So did you swoon over Haley Mills too?
Posted by: fran at December 28, 2004 08:46 AMLawrence Welk!?!?!?
Dear dog...has my mother gotten to you!?!?!?
Posted by: Kathy Howe at December 28, 2004 09:08 AMBuzz: Thanks for the Lawrence Welk post. I love him and his shows.
Posted by: Baby at December 28, 2004 09:15 AMSpongebob does it for me. And Bugs Bunny. Although considered childrens' shows, they absolutely have adult humor in them. Or maybe that's how I justify watching them without any of my kidsin the room.
Posted by: GerryK at December 28, 2004 10:06 AMUnivision gets me with the absolutely *HOT* babes on all their shows.
Posted by: keith at December 28, 2004 11:02 AMI just can't shake the feeling that if you watch the Spanish-language soap operas long enough; you'll get some porn mixed in.
Posted by: M at December 28, 2004 01:31 PMWhen I was a teenager, I had a huge crush on Tom on Lawrence Welk (that would be the good-looking blond guy who forgot the words).
I'll bet your dream is to someday find that someone has dubbed LW into Spanish.
