I was bouncing around from link to link the other day and ran across a site (sorry, I can't remember who it was) that asked the question "Who's got the most overrated blog?". You know, a site that gets more traffic than it deserves. Wow! What a lousy question. I have several "of course"s regarding that question:
Of course it turned into a hate-fest!
Of course it was all about the 'political' blogs!
Of course people's feeling's were hurt!
Seriously, how could it be otherwise? And I really don't like the concept of an "overrated blog". If you think a site is not worth your time, I have this really brilliant idea; don't visit it. I know, I know, I'm a freakin' genius!
I think a better question might be "Who has the most underrated blog?" There are so many great sites out there that just don't get the attention that they deserve. In my opinion, at least. Sites that don't go out of their way to be controversial. Sites that don't keep ramming their political ideologies down your throat. Sites that are funny, well written, insightful and, unfortunately, not visited nearly enough.
Those are the sites that should be getting our attention. The so-called overrated sites (which I disagree with) are getting enough traffic without us bringing even more attention to them.
So how about you? Got any "underrated" sites out there that you'd like to share with the rest of the class?
Posted by Buzz at July 21, 2004 06:52 AMWay easy answer....

Posted by: -d at July 21, 2004 08:28 AMToo many to count...that's why I am a hopper. I try to read someone new every day...that's how I found you! P.S. In my book, YOU are underated!
Posted by: debby at July 21, 2004 08:45 AMHm, I see nobody's done this yet, so in the interest of satisfying my never-ending narcissism, I would say moi. :)
Posted by: Caitlin at July 21, 2004 09:37 AMTwo sites come to mind, actually three, but I can't count my own, even if I am underrated in my own mind.
www.diverzions.net www.patchworkprogression.com
Posted by: Mike at July 21, 2004 10:20 AMWell first we know you are not recognized as you should be so we must starte here.......next I would say
http://www.attheheartofit.com/
http://www.hunny-hive.com/
http://www.magnoliaglen.org/
http://www.inkjetbluesjournal.com/
I will leave you with those of course I would love to invite you to visit with me at www.alwaysvictoria.com.
I was going to say Ken at Ink Jet Blues Journal, too.
Posted by: Busy Mom at July 21, 2004 10:34 AMSome of the best sites I have found are underrated.Just sites that I have happened upon, not heard about.I try to visit a few new ones every week.
Posted by: emily at July 21, 2004 10:35 AMI don't know about underrated, but my site is definitely way overrated.
But that's not a bad thing in my mind... :-)
Posted by: Les at July 21, 2004 10:46 AMWhat? Huh? X-rated blogs? Where?
Sorry, just getting back into the swing of things from vacation.
Posted by: Solonor at July 21, 2004 11:08 AMOther then yours I would say mine, but I would be bias and maybe just pimping for hits....
Posted by: Tom at July 21, 2004 11:21 AMPeople generally enjoy a bitchfest.
Let's face it, we're lucky to be able to choose those blogs that appeal to us personally.
We're lucky that there are enough out there to pick and choose.
I think Time For Your Meds by Tracy is one of the most interesting and well written blogs around. A single, gay mom who is a psych nurse/writer is bound to be interesting. Be sure to check out the archives.
Posted by: Nanc' at July 21, 2004 11:48 AMI really don't care about "ratings" and I don't like the politic and the hurtful/hateful blogs. I don't even visit them. I like the ones that are real and personal, good for a laugh, cry, or someone who needs a virtual hug.
Most on my blogroll, good friends are underrated in my opinion. Some are very popular and others aren't but should be. These people have a lot of good things to say.
Have a great day!!
Posted by: Karen at July 21, 2004 11:53 AMI'd have to agree with Karen. I don't believe there are any on my blogroll that shouldn't have higher hit ratings. They wouldn't be on the roll if I didn't enjoy reading them everyday. (And, of course, I'd like to see more visitors to my site too.)
Posted by: K at July 21, 2004 12:16 PMhttp://lilywhiteintentions.com/
home to Jules, the most kick-ass writer i know. and she's built a tiki lounge in her backyard and throws great parties too!
Posted by: P at July 21, 2004 12:20 PMThere are so many great places to visit and learn from/laugh with on the web these days. How can you pick just a few! Such creative people. You of coarse are up there... but me-thinks you are recognized. Like your on everybody's list and rightly so. I have to add Vicki's http://www.alwaysvictoria.com/ on the list. What an inspiration She is! Another person that should have the traffic of a very BIG Blog. Is Anne at Fishbucket: http://www.fishbucket.net If you don't smile and get filled up there there is no hope for you. Spinning: http://smgct.typepad.com/spinning/ is another great place. Her words melt in your head like a delicious ice cream cone on a hot summer's day.
Thanks Buzz for doing this.... You ARE awesome! :-)
Posted by: Sallie at July 21, 2004 12:32 PMThe internet if fickle. All web sites are either way overrated, or way underrated.
Popularity comes and goes in such extreme pulses that it's almost meaningless; particularly in the blog scene.
Posted by: Frac at July 21, 2004 01:04 PMI read that entry you refer to and laughed my ass off. It was such a desperate plea for traffic, and everyone got all pissy. If you're a conservative, you picked on the liberal blogs, and vice versa. If you considered yourself a A-list blogger, you picked on anyone who gets more traffic than you. It was silly.
As for who I think is underrated on my massive blogroll....well, there are a lot, but I'll pick Urban Outback to highlight.
Posted by: mac at July 21, 2004 03:29 PMThis is a great idea. I recommend www.weaveandunravel.typepad.com
Posted by: Nicole at July 21, 2004 04:15 PMHmm......funny you post something like this. I kind of float about when I can and found yours under the same premise. I like your blog quite a bit.....
Posted by: Kymmie at July 21, 2004 04:21 PMThat's like John Madden who (every damn game) talks about "the most underrated corner back" or "most underrated kicker" or whatever.
Every. Game.
They can't all be underrated! Or can they? Have I found a catch?
Posted by: ben at July 21, 2004 05:55 PMWell, I think you're the only one who agreed with me that the overrated thing was a bad idea.
Here's some underrateds, if it's not too late.
Posted by: michele at July 21, 2004 07:06 PMMy absolute favorite person to read is Jenn over at Karmatown. She makes me laugh heartily or at least make my mouth do this weird thing where the corners up-turn just about every time I read her. I absolutely recommend.
Posted by: Christina at July 21, 2004 07:17 PMMine with my 5 hits a day.
Posted by: nefarious at July 21, 2004 08:29 PMI'm late, as usual, but I'd like to nominate a new favorite, Shaunacat at http://www.mizjenna.com/~9lives/ . She writes long posts, but she is bright, funny, and a downright sweet person. She can always make you smile.
Posted by: etherian at July 21, 2004 09:07 PMCan i be an underrated blog? I'm not all that well written. Most of my material is bitter and angry. I have a tendency to go off on tangents and make no sense. . .Ok, now i see why i am underrated, or not rated at all.
Posted by: garybibb at July 21, 2004 11:48 PMI always come late to these things. I vote for nef
Posted by: Dinky Chickenshorts at July 22, 2004 04:11 AMThanks, Sweet N Sassy! You are a doll! And I love Always Victoria as well.
What a fun post.....
See, I go away for a few days and I miss everything.
I visit a lot of blogs and am always expanding my fave list over at Magnolia Glen. And that list doesn't hold a candle to the list of blogs I keep my eye on and keep adding to.
It's a wonderful world out there. I need to check all of these links out. I know I visit a bunch of you already....
Posted by: Vickie at July 22, 2004 11:21 AMoops...kinda late on this. don't think my site really counts as a blog, but it's definitely a photolog. (and an underrated one at that =^)
Posted by: JC at July 23, 2004 01:41 PMi remember a year or so ago there was much talk about an "A" list of blogs - Wil Wheaton, Little Yellow Different, Jish, Davezilla, etc.
feeling perhaps unappreciated, several people at once, including myself, came up with an idea for a "Z" list of underrated blogs in response. the idea was to give home to an ever-growing group of like-minded bloggers "unconcerned" about ratings or hits.
guess what happened?
elitism struck as Zee listers scratched, clawed and snubbed each other in order to become Z-list elite.
oh the irony.
I agree with Frac, popularity is fleeting. And just like in high school, the in crowd peak as soon as they are considered one of the cool ones whereas smaller blogs that take their time to unfold on a daily basis are the more interesting ones for me. It tells me a blogger is a multifaceted person and that if I stick with their blog long enough, there will be tonnes of payoffs each and every day that I can only appreciate as I get to know the writer over my morning coffee. And really, isn't that how you want to get to know a person anyway as they slowly win your heart over while engaging your mind jut a bit more tomorrow than they did today or yesterday? Friendships may start in a single moment as you bond over something meaningless or meaningful, but it takes time before a relationships can hit their stride.
