A vast wasteland

Ok, now I see why insomniacs complain. I always thought that sleeping less would be good. You know, more time to do stuff. Now I see that it just means that it just makes you tireder and grumpier. Damn.

So there I was last night not feeling so well (I think the Empress and I caught some sort of belly bug) and I thought I would see how late night/early morning TV was doing. Here's a quick overview:

TV3 - Local news - all night. Same news - all night
TV6 - Replay of 11:00 news - all night
TV10 - A bad western
TV11 - Local real estate (I actually watched this for about a half an hour)
TV12 - Interview with local government worker
TV15 - Shop-At-Home featuring coins
TV19 - Girls Gone Wild
TV22 - Shop-At-Home featuring (of all things) swords (I'm not kidding)
TV31 - Back to back to back Tom Cruise movies (but not Top Gun - Dang it!).
TV33 - Girls Gone Wild ripoff tapes (I'm not kidding)
TV36 - Phillies replay (they lost)
TV38 - Shop-At-Home featuring coins again (What!!??)
TV40 - Ab-Flex or Belly-Buster or Thigh Kruncher infomercial
TV50 - Religious sayings with classical music and pictures of the ocean
TV52 - Shop-At-Home featuring fabulous diamonique
TV57 - Girls Gone Wild
TV63 - A bad western
TV67 - Spanish speaking soap opera (this was about the cream of the crop)
TV78 - Adult Swim - this was good when Futurama was on but then it turned into japanese cartoon people with quivering mouths and giant eyes. Too creepy.)

And that's about it. If there's anything worse than overnight TV, I don't know what it is (except maybe daytime TV). And I watched several hours of this.

Insomniacs of the world. I salute you. And pity you. You have got it rough!

It's why I stick to TV Land or Nick at Nite or Animal Planet. Those are the best things on at night!

Posted by: Empress at July 20, 2004 07:00 AM

I always have The Godfather Sagas on DVD for emergencies like that.

Posted by: debby at July 20, 2004 07:27 AM

spanish soap operas make it kinda all worth it though, no?

Posted by: yvonne at July 20, 2004 07:42 AM

I see what you mean - how did you ever decide on which channel to watch "girls gone wild"?

Posted by: Lee at July 20, 2004 07:50 AM

You didn't watch Channel 19???

Posted by: Dell at July 20, 2004 07:50 AM

was the swords one the 150 piece knife set, with everything from steak knives to swords? that cracks me up every time i see it. who would buy that?!

Posted by: geeky at July 20, 2004 08:16 AM

Pat's right TV LAND rules.....If that doesn't work you can always catch one of those Trading Spaces on TLC or American Chopper on Discovery.

Posted by: MIKE at July 20, 2004 08:38 AM

I love that picture.

Posted by: Pixie at July 20, 2004 09:17 AM

I think the Spanish soap operas are more exciting than the Girls Gone Wild infomercials. Seriously.

And I have all five seasons of Babylon 5 on DVD, as well as the first three seasons of OZ, just for such insomniac occasions.

Posted by: keith at July 20, 2004 10:22 AM

My husband is an insomniac; A noisy insomniac. It's brought us to the brink of divorce a few times.

Posted by: Nanc' at July 20, 2004 10:26 AM

Funny you should post about insomnia after the night I had. ;-) Not a lot on, but TV Land is always good - or I pop in a DVD or video that I've seen a lot so hopefully it will put me to sleep.

Have a great day!

three different channels of Girls Gone Wild?! damn -- who's your cable company and where do i go to sign up!

Posted by: P at July 20, 2004 10:53 AM

Oh man, I'm having flashbacks to each of those loooong, sleepless, pregnant nights when I couldn't do anything but sit up perfectly straight. Those Girls Gone Wild promos are just a big tease.

Posted by: Mindy at July 20, 2004 10:58 AM

Empress is also an insomniac, no ? Maybe in the future, instead of watching TV, you should come up with an activity that :
1) you could do together
2) would also tire you both out
I can't think of anything off-hand, but if I do, I'll let you know.

that's why i just play playstation if i can't sleep. either that or surf the net for porn. oops, was that out loud?

Posted by: tj at July 20, 2004 11:52 AM

I saw an 'info-mercial' on the navy one late night - my husband and I laughed so hard on how silly it looked. They made an aircraft carrier sound like the love-boat cruise ship! But if someone is up that late at night... who better to recruit? :)

Sorry y'all are feelin yucky
that can make things pretty sucky
maybe what you really need
is a glass of wine and a ounce of weed

(NOTE: I do not condone the use of illegal drugs in any way but I needed a rhyme!)

Posted by: Jeff A at July 20, 2004 12:36 PM

Then you went to sleep and dreamt about drunk college girls with all the good parts pixelated, wearing diamonique jewelry and cowboy hats, brandishing swords and selling real estate for coins, right?

Posted by: Lisa at July 20, 2004 02:01 PM

So, is that a picture of your midnight snack?

Posted by: Amber at July 20, 2004 03:15 PM

Maybe I should sign up for cable after all. Girls Gone Wild might make being an insomniac worth it.

Posted by: Dinky Chickenshorts at July 20, 2004 04:05 PM

Oh my god ! ! Dinky Chickenshorts is (are?) back ! ! !

My hubby thinks Spanish Soap Operas are great watchs them all the time....does he really understand...not much but he likes what he sees...

Posted by: Sweet N Sassy at July 20, 2004 05:21 PM

Hubby and I have been swapping insomnia back and forth for a week now. I watch infomercials and Telemundo to see if I remember my high school Spanish.

He watches TiVo'd episodes of Star Trek. Many, many episodes.

Posted by: Amalah at July 20, 2004 05:36 PM

I am quite partial to the juicer infomercial, as well as anything by showtime involving watching food get cooked. It gets me all inspired. And then I realize I don't have a kitchen or a house of my own, or even the funds to pay off those "5 easy payments!". Bah.

Posted by: Caitlin at July 20, 2004 06:40 PM

Three versions of Girls Gone Wild and two 'Bad Westerns'? Dude... you had it made. Of course Empress would have been grumpy when you came to bed after all the shooting and T&A. I can hear it now:
'Buzz, go take a cold shower... and put those chaps and spurs away!!'

Posted by: nefarious at July 20, 2004 11:05 PM

Oh that so sounds like a night I had two weeks ago while on vacation. I could have survived with my vast collection of channels and DVD's at home, but on the road, we had 33 channels and nothing on all night, I kept flying around in a circle and didn't stop at anything for more then 5 mins. It really sucked, it made not being able to sleep worse.

Posted by: Tom at July 21, 2004 11:23 AM

Infomercials for stupid products are the pits. Also the Blind Date reality shows with the piped in comments are pretty cheesy. Fortunately, I am fast asleep when most of this airs.

Posted by: ken at July 21, 2004 02:39 PM

Spanish-language soap operas always remind me of porn movies without the porn part.
