Over the past several months, I have read more than a couple "I've been a bad blogger" posts. Everyone of them that I read, I understood. So now it's my turn.
In doing a quick self-assesment, I think that there were a couple of things that made me a so-called "good blogger". One: I tried to send an e-mail back to almost every commentor and Two: I tried to comment on other people's blogs as often as I could.
I also tried hard to make this site an easy site to visit. More fun than angst. Very little political or controversial action (although the whole crunchy v. creamy issue got pretty heated). And it seemed to work. I liked that people felt free to comment here.
Well, it seems to have backfired a bit. I can no longer keep up with all of the comments and I feel bad when I just can't get to everyone with an e-mail response. Sorry 'bout that, folks. I try.
I also find that I just don't have the time to visit other sites as often as I'd like. People are out there getting jobs, losing jobs, getting haircuts, falling in and out of love, having babies, etc. and I'm missing it. And then I feel bad about that, too.
Point is, I'm just struggling with this blogging bit right now. So I think I need a break. I've decided (during the writing of this post, actually), to put myself on a one week hiatus. That's right folks, no posts from Buzz. I think a week will give me plenty of time to decide whether I want to keep doing this or not. Right now, I'm just tired of writing and tired of feeling guilty because I can't pay enough attention to you guys. I think it was that Lileks dude who coined the word 'blogligations'. I like it. I just can't keep up with my blogligations right now.
If this disappoints you or pisses you off, I'm sorry. My gut feeling is that a lot of you can relate. Maybe not. I don't know. And if you want to delink me because I haven't posted, that's ok. No hard feelings.
So, I guess I'll sign off for the week. I hope you guys all have a great one and thanks for the unbelievable support that you've all given me. In the meantime, it just wouldn't be me without leaving you with something to look at so I'm putting up a couple of pics of two of my favorites. Sandra and Kate. Together. As god intended.
Have a GREAT week, folks. And, as always, I love you!
Posted by Buzz at May 14, 2004 06:34 AMHave a good week off, Buzz. I will miss ya in the interim.
I totally understand every word you said. I've been blogging for less than one year...and there are days I just can't come up with anything to say and I have even less time to visit the blogs of those I cherish, let alone post there.
That makes me feel bad and it makes me wonder if I'm cut out for this world of bloggery. I think anyone with a blog has faced the same dilemma at some point - or many points - as life moves us along.
Anyhoo, I think you do a wonderful job here. It would be sad to see you stop - because you do bring a lot of fun and information to us all each and every day.
Posted by: Vickie at May 14, 2004 07:12 AMI know how you feel, but sometimes I wonder how much I blog for me or other people. I was thinking the other day about this a lot. I don't feel that I have posted anything of substance, but then I thought that this is like a diary to me and was able to atleast get some things off of my chest, whether anyone else found it interesting or not. If you go, I will miss you, but let me tell ya, I can relate!
Happy Week!
Posted by: Adelle at May 14, 2004 07:19 AMI have been wrestling with the exact same feelings. I feel bad when I don't get around to visit all my blog friends, and sometimes my comments are just "saying hi" rather than something substantial.
The blog gets to feeling like an obligation- I like the word "blogligation" and it isn't as much fun for sure!!!!
Take care Buzz, enjoy your week!
What?? No Buzz for a whole week?? Impossible..how will we survive! I guess everyone needs a break now and then, it can't be easy being brilliant every day and struggling to entertain the masses. Enjoy your week off, though we'll sure miss ya. I have only been blogging since August, and I go through that "I got nothin'" thing now and then. Fortunately for me, not many people would notice if I stopped, so the pressure is a whole lot less LOL Oh well, see ya when ya get back. : O)
Posted by: JaxVenus at May 14, 2004 07:29 AMI completely understand the need to take some time off. I just hope you don't quit blogging altogether! Have a great week off! I'll miss you.
Posted by: Kirsi at May 14, 2004 07:40 AMHi ya, BuzzSaw. Don't feel guilty. I love comments and although I read them all (and any emails I get too) I hardly ever respond to them (bad blogger me, huh?).
So when you come back (and confidence is high that you will return after this week's hiatus) put up a disclaimer saying you'll read all the comments but may not (or do not have the time or energy) to respond to any of them.
Every now and then I mention in a post that I get to as many blogs in my "roll" that I can and may not leave a comment on any of 'em by I do stop in to see what's going on with them.
BTW, I'd be willing to bet this week's withdrawal won't be totally permanent, in that you may not be posting but you'll be visiting (no email reply to this comment is necessary or required). See? I'm doing my part to make this next week a stress-free week for ya.
Posted by: Colin at May 14, 2004 07:47 AMI think we all know what you are feeling right now. Even understand it. So *hugggggggs* I'll be here, as will most, waiting for you to get "Buzzy" again. =)
Dude?!?!?! No beefcake??? Just chicks? TSK *sighs* =)
Posted by: lauren at May 14, 2004 07:50 AMs'all good. i, for one, don't expect replies from every comment i leave out there in blogland anyway. heck, most of my comments are just off-the-cuff remarks that don't need a response anyway.
i'll miss you, but i know the feeling man. take a break, then come back. we'll be waiting with baited breath.
Posted by: tj at May 14, 2004 07:58 AMHave a great week Buzz!
Posted by: Mike at May 14, 2004 08:08 AMI think every blogger knows where you're coming from. But I wish you didn't feel like you have blogligations. I would still be an avid reader even if you only posted once a week or less than that. It's quality, not quantity. Enjoy your week off and I do hope to see you back.
Posted by: Shelby at May 14, 2004 08:11 AMTotally understand. I don't answer every comment either, and I don't get a ton... Some things just don't need responses, I've never felt slighted because you didn't respond to mine everytime. I know you know I'm here... elsewise I won't comment, and I'd just leave you the hell alone wouldn't I?
Have a good week, and don't feel guilty. When I start to, I remind myself, my blog's for me, not everyone else... :) Keep that in mind. See you later.
Posted by: Autumn at May 14, 2004 08:11 AMTOTALLY understand. Have a great week off!
When you come back, though, you might consider this...don't try so hard to be "good." Be what you are. Let your blog be what it is. We all love you. Relax, my friend!
Posted by: QC at May 14, 2004 08:35 AMYes I understand where you are coming from. But like I told a fellow blogger recently, don't feel like you need to post 10 times a day or write a novel every day 0r even post every single day for that matter. You don't need to put that kind of pressure on yourelf hence making it less fun for you.
Enjoy your week and hope to see you back soon.
Posted by: Charlene at May 14, 2004 08:36 AMBuzz, I personally will miss reading your daily updates but completely understand what your saying. I think your a great guy and hope a week off helps.
With that being said we(YOUR LOYAL AUDIENCE) can keep this thing going during your hiatus. Last time you weren't around we did the alphabet. This time let's do a TEAM 100.
I will start it off:
1: Speaking for everyone if I can. Your #1 BUZZ.
Posted by: MIKE at May 14, 2004 08:50 AMI TOTALLY UNDERSTAND HOW YOU FEEL!
I used to blog on Kazoofus multiple times a day. In recent weeks...or maybe months... I simply have not had the time. I've been blogging for a few years now and it used to kill me when I would watch my stats and comments dwindle because I didn't have the time to blog. And I always felt terrible that people kept coming back looking for posts that simply were not there. I am now to a point where I am guilt free about this stuff now. It is, afterall, my blog. It is free entertainment for those that step through it. I have to keep my priorities in check and unfortunately Kazoofus does not pay my bills.
Enjoy your week off...I vote you had the keys to JJJJB. He would make a swell guest-poster. :)
Posted by: Kathy Howe at May 14, 2004 08:50 AMI certainly understand my brother. You deserve the break. Take it. Enjoy it. We'll be here when you get back. :-)
Posted by: nefarious at May 14, 2004 08:51 AMenjoy your vacation..send us a postcard or buy us something pretty when you get back! I'll miss you!
Posted by: Sabrina at May 14, 2004 08:58 AMI'm sure everyone will understand that you need a break. I'm also sure that you will be missed during that week. Have a great time during your blogging time-off!
Posted by: GC at May 14, 2004 08:58 AMBuzz, you know you completely rock and the fact that you try is good enough for me. Its easy for this to become something like a full time job but then it loses some of its fun. Kick back, relax and I, for one, will be here when you get back!
Posted by: Chris at May 14, 2004 09:27 AMHave a good week off, Buzz. We'll miss you.
p.s. you don't have to send me a reply email. :)
Posted by: tj in az at May 14, 2004 09:40 AMI understand. But I hope you can get over the feeling that you have to email everyone and read everyone- it's just impossible! That's why I tend to reply to comments right there on my blog, either in the comments or in another post (if I reply at all.)
Not to say I don't cherish my Buzz email!!!
Have a nice rest, see you when you get back!
Posted by: annie at May 14, 2004 09:45 AMI hope you can pull the key points out of all this rambling.
Buzzie, I don't know where the "Offical Rules of Blogger's Etiquette" are kept, but you know that whoever wrote them had WAY too much time on their hands. As a "Lays" blogger, you're not the type of person who can do this half-way (betcha can't post just once).
So maybe you need to redefine to yourself what's really necessary, and what isn't. (For example, people don't come to your site so you'll send them an email after they comment on your posts - they come to read and react to your posts.) If you don't have the time to be the IDEAL blogger (which IS what you want to be), then figure out if you'll be happy doing what you need to do to be a GREAT blogger. (I'll help you out - just be yourself.)
If feeling compelled to follow all the rules makes you stop blogging, then don't stop blogging - stop following all the rules ! !
Keep this in mind - everybody out there would rather see Buzz post just once a week, than to see Buzz stop posting completely. Anyway, despite what you've been thinking, it's not about us. It's about YOU.
I think....You should do WHAT you want. WHEN you want to. As OFTEN or as LITTLE as you would like. Without replying to every (or even any) comment. There should be no more pressure here than in any other social situation. People love you for who you are, what you say, and how you say it. They'll understand if you have other OBligations. There ain't enough of Buzz to go around, and they'll just have to be happy with the little piece of Buzz that they get.
Does ANYBODY disagree with that ?
And, Buzzie, if you do decide to stop completely, it was great while it lasted. I think everybody really appreciated what you did. They say everything comes in 3's. Friends, Frasier, and Buzzstuff - at least one of you will go out while you're still on top.
Posted by: Willie's Buddy Jimmy at May 14, 2004 09:57 AMWBJ is very wise.
Posted by: Busy Mom at May 14, 2004 10:01 AMI think I'm going to cry! I just hope you decide to come back. I can certainly understand your position though. I also try to reply to every comment, but I just can't always. I'm not going to let myself blog on my vacation because I could use a break, but I love it so much I can't give it up. But when I'm back I'm sure I'll have a lot to talk about. We'll miss you!!
Posted by: Cornelia at May 14, 2004 10:47 AMBuzz, as I figured this is how it goes. You (and I) both started blogs to put our feelings out there. We have been able to make new friends, make some acquaintances and learn alot about others and ourselves. If somebody is bitching because you have given them adequate attention, "F' em" is what I'm pretty much saying. You didn't start blogging just for them. So they should get over it, and you should blog on babe!
Sometimes breaks/reflection time is needed. That's all good! Enjoy your time and remember to be yourself!
Rella
Posted by: Cinderella at May 14, 2004 11:09 AM*sniffle* We'll miss you Buzz! I know what those same feelings are like and I've struggled with the same for a long while. Enjoy your week off! (cause that's all you're allowed :P just kidding)
Posted by: mel at May 14, 2004 11:15 AMAMEN.
If it helps you feel better, you DON'T have to reply to every comment, and I don't think anyone expects you to! Either that, or I am a far worse blogger; I only reply when there seems to be something to add or respond to.
We love you Buzz, and will be here either way. I am putting a LOCK on your link--it will never be deleted from my blogroll. So even if you take this thing down, people will just have to deal with the 404 page.
BTW, there must be something in the air, because I have been thinking of making a similar announcement this week... I'll do the explanatory post anyway, but haven't decided whether to pull the blog or put it on hiatus.
Rest up, sweetie.
Posted by: Mindy at May 14, 2004 12:02 PMI've always appreciated how often you respond to my comments. That's cool.
If you don't already use an RSS aggregator, you may find it'll ge tthe job done for keeping track of other people's blogs. I've tried a few and bloglines seems to be the best.
Posted by: ed at May 14, 2004 12:31 PMAHhhh! The epidemic spreads! everyone is all into blog guesting (AKA blogwhoring) and now Blog breaking? Its like the sasser worm of the blogmind! Like I said.. pretty soon its gonna be one guy named Gary in Indiana in his parents basement guesting on everyones blog, and he alone will control the universe! er.. blogiverse... er something!
Posted by: J(QW) at May 14, 2004 12:37 PMI can understand how you feel. You replied to also my cheap comment. I really appreciated it everytime because my English is bad .
I think I cant visit many blogs more than you. That's why I cant add new blogs I like for a long time.... I would like to have many people who read my strange blog, but It is impossible I think.
I just thought I would keep writing to learn English ,because I would like to keep in touch with my foreigner friends and then I would like to meet new people.
The most important things is keep doing what you want.
You should blog for yourself, so you can have a rest when you feel so tired. You can quit post if you dont want to do.
But I still hope you keep blogging because I REALLY ENJOY YOUR BLOG even if I cant read everything, everyday!!
I guess you cant imagine hou much I love talking .. So I am very sad now because I cant say nice things to make you better..
I am sorry...:'(
I always think I wish I would become a native English speaker when I want to talk much..
Good Riddance!! Now I don't have to read about your beloved Flyers! and all those jokes...and funny news stories....and pictures of those pretty girls.....and how that one coworker annoys you....and....I'm gonna miss you.
Posted by: Lee at May 14, 2004 01:48 PMMe sad now!
Come back Buzzzzzzzzzzz!!!!!!!!!!!
I have recently started coming to your blog.
Let me first say that I never expect a comment back. It's a bonus when it happens but it's never expected.
I have enjoyed your wit.
Thank you for sharing your world. Hope you decide to stay.
Can I fix you some chicken soup?

Posted by: MIKE at May 14, 2004 06:19 PMHey, at least you post - more than I can say for myself sometimes!
Posted by: Adam at May 14, 2004 06:30 PMI second ALL that WJB said, he is indeed wise. And a wise-ass, but that's a whole different subject. ;)
My comment got too long so I'm gonna post an entry on my blog and use it as an excuse to try to figure out how this Trackback doohickey works...
Enjoy your time off! :)
Posted by: the Procrastinatrix at May 14, 2004 06:38 PMI will personally watch over your site to make sure if Sandra shows, she has an escort. I could post a new pic everyday of her for ya?
On a serious note. Rest, sit the bench, the bench has your back!
Posted by: Genuine at May 14, 2004 06:50 PMWell good grief, don't feel sorry about it! I have learned that one thing is for sure in the short 1 year I've had a computer- It takes up a TON of time if you let it. I only read 5 blogs and my e-mail (which isn't much) and maybe some news and it sucks up way more time than I'd like it to. You have important things to do in "real" life- make more time to enjoy them! We will miss you, but we are grown-ups, I think we can handle it!! Have a great weekend! :)
Posted by: Chelle at May 14, 2004 07:32 PMLet's continue the numbers game:
4 is the number of shots I've had so far...
5 is how early Buzz has to get up to go fishing tomorrow!
Posted by: Empress at May 14, 2004 07:46 PMWhat is all this crap about people saying it is okay? It's not okay, man. I need my Buzz fix everydamnday. You think this blog is about you? It's not, my friend.
(drama mode off)
There, just in case you actually expected someone to give you grief, you have officially gotten it. Take your break now, hon. Move on. ;-)
As for me, I just hope you know you are loved and adored by many. If you need a break, by all means, take it. You deserve it. We will all be here for you when you get back. YOU take care of yourself, okay?
(Of course, Kate and Sandra were nice, but for forgiveness a little Matt goes a a long way. I'm just sayin'...)
6 is for the amount fish BUZZ will catch.
7 is for the...LOOKS like the FLYERS series is going 7 games.
MAN I'M TIRED...>STILL AT WORK, YIPPEEEEEE
Posted by: MIKE at May 14, 2004 11:29 PMBuzz...I don't read your site and comment because I expect to hear back from you or because I want you to read my site(run on sentence..sorry), I read your site because you share funny stories and interesting insights. You are fun. I appreciate you and Pat letting me into a little bit of your world, and I can tell from what I read, you two are good people. Take your break and enjoy it! Everyone deserves a break. I hope that if you come back, that blogging won't be a chore. Because, it really shouldn't be. Besides, if you are a bad blogger, than I am really in the crapper! I don't do half the things you said a good blogger does. I do it, because I enjoy it! Now have a GREAT weekend with your beautiful wife.
Posted by: Nicole at May 15, 2004 12:44 AMWell said Nicole.....Now think of something for 8 will you.
Posted by: MIKE at May 15, 2004 12:49 AMas everyone else has said, you're not alone. i've been doing this for three and a half years now and at times i'm still not sure why i'm doing it. i think it's the sense of community that comes from seeing what others think about the drivel i throw up there. i've always been amazed by the shear number of quality posts that you've been able to crank out each day -- you're kind of a non-polictical Mac... :) but you know, there's no rule that says you have to post as much as you do. i'm sure all of us would agree that getting to read you a couple times a week would still be fine.
take it easy for the next week man -- hope to see you back here soon.
Posted by: P at May 15, 2004 02:00 AMHave a great week, Buzz! Relax, have a few drinks, and relax some more.
In real life, if you called each of your friends every day, you'd never get anything else done. Your friends know you're still their buddy even when they don't hear from you. Same thing with your blog. No need to post daily or reply to everyone. You're still a great guy and we all know it!
Posted by: Erin at May 15, 2004 02:13 AMWow. Just last night I was thinking to myself that I don't know how people like you do it. I've completely given up writing in my blog and have turned it into a photoblog for the time being. It's keeping me happy and that's the only reason I started it in the first place. Buzz, I hope you enjoy your time off and really hope that you come back. I love reading your stuff. :D

I always marvelled at the fact that you replied to every comment I ever made through e-mail.
So very impressive.
I say that if you want to stop providing that extra personal touch...I won't hold it against you.
I don't get nearly as many hits as you do and I don't have the time to reply via e-mail to every single one of them.
Just don't stop the blogging thing...don't let the comments drown you.

NOW, not coming the two hours to NYC to see me... well... (wink wink)

Posted by: Gary at May 18, 2004 10:25 AMGary, best guess is that we have to wait another 66 hours and 24 minutes. This cliffhangar (will he or won't he?) is worse than the "Who Shot JR" thing back in the 80's, but at least we don't have to wait all summer for the answer to this one. Posted by: katherine at May 18, 2004 04:56 PMI can definitely empathize- I'm just now reading that you are on haitus because I am so behind on my blog reading. And here I sit, feeling guilty because I haven't stopped by sooner..
A break is good- gives you a chance to recharge or change direction. I hope you return, recharged and energized with a renewed vigor but if that's not the case, just know that I have really enjoyed getting to know you here and I have always enjoyed your comments and emails. You are a one hell of a good guy, Buzz. :-)
Posted by: michelle at May 18, 2004 11:51 PMThere are 79 other comments before mine, so I don't even know if mine will get read.
But this is what I would like to say:
This whole blogging thing has become really ridiculous. It went from a place where people could have fun designing a nice homepage and writing about their live. For some, theraputic, for some, entertainment. Either way, it started with good intentions.
Now, people feel like they have to take "breaks" from blogging for various reasons. They feel like they have obligations to other people, as far as linking to them, commenting on their blogs... and most disturbingly, writing posts that appease the audience.
Why? Why aren't people writing their blogs for themselves? And reading blogs that they like? Why is there this ridiculous obligation to link to every freaking person who comments?
I write my blog for me, and it's nice that a few other people read it. Sometimes I write for them, but mostly for me. The links/blogroll on my blog are strictly blogs that I read every day. I link to them, because I think it gives people an idea of who I am, based on what else I read. And, hopefully, it allows the casual reader to find other blogs they like, based on my recommendations.
And why do I read those blogs that I link to? Because I like the way the bloggers write. They make me laugh, they make me think, they entertain me while I sit at my desk and bemoan the boring crap I have to wade through at work.
Seems there's a community of people who have let blogging become some sort of warped popularity contest. Blogligations? (Or whatever it's called...) I can hardly think of anything more self-serving. I have enough obligations in real life, thanks -- imposing obligations on myself through my creative outlet on the internet... well, that just seems like something people are doing to feed their own egos. As if people are going to honestly be upset if the posts are infrequent, if there aren't replies to comments, or GOD FORBID, the posts aren't interesting to everyone. Who CARES? For the weirdos who complain when their favorite bloggers aren't posting to some sort of level they're expecting... go get a LIFE, people.
Buzz, I'm not knocking you here, but if you don't reply to every comment... who the hell cares? Seriously, does it really matter? And honestly, this whole thing about, "You can delink me because I haven't posted..." Are we in grade 5 here? Why is everyone so bloody concerned with being linked to and linking and living up to some weird obligations they think they have.
Really, people. There are much bigger things to think about in life.
And the really sad thing, here, is that I'm probably going to get plenty of people bitching at me for this comment. But, I think it just further proves my point.
Posted by: Kim at May 19, 2004 10:28 AMWow, dude, 80 comments. Sorry, but I didn't read them all. I just stopped in to say GOOD FOR YOU for actually NOT blogging when you say you're not going to. I can't tell you how many bloggers I've read who "take a break" only to come back 24 hrs. later.
Anyway, I hope you're back with us soon but I think that point may have been made somewhere in these 80 comments :).
Posted by: Shelby at May 19, 2004 12:36 PMWho is this Buzz guy everybody keeps gabbing about? I miss Fish Tales, damn it! Now that was a blog site!
Posted by: JJJB at May 19, 2004 12:53 PMjust my 2¢...you should in no way feel obligated to answer every comment via email. That's friggin INSANE! I'm sure your regular readers would be just as happy to be able to read your witty and entertaining posts and be able to comment without personal attention back. It would be nice if you could possibly respond to some comments in the comments window yourself but even that isnot necessary. Anyway, enjoy your week off and I hope you choose to return to blogging.
Posted by: JenBen at May 19, 2004 06:53 PMwow... now THAT'S a response! and you've said everything I didn't say in my post on the same subject. keep enjoying your holiday buzz darlin', I look forward to your return.
and btw, isn't it funny how trying to amuse people can be downright hard? I made the same commitment to keep angsty stuff outta DQ and keep it fun, but it's totally become hard work lately. the ole blogligtions eh... *hugs* for you and your empress :)
Posted by: goldie at May 19, 2004 11:14 PMNo Pity Party Bud.
Your place is within Blogland.
Get your ass rested up and we'll be here to welcome you back... myself with beer in-hand.
Cheers.

Posted by: M at May 20, 2004 05:04 PMBuzz withdrawal ... wah!
By the way ... I lurk and make comments here and again. I promise not to be hurt if you don't reply every time.
:)
Posted by: Lisa at May 20, 2004 05:31 PMJust checking in again. BUZZ I always read you but don't generally comment. I will comment when you come back again and never expect a reply.
PS Shrek was AWESOME
Buzz, you are missed... but seriously, your blog = your rules. You sound like a terrific and supportive friend to many, but it's not fair for you to feel obligated to post daily and make a snappy comment on every blog. Be good to you and know that we're excited to have you back when you're ready, and to the extent that is most comfortable for you.
