Weekend Did You Know

Man! It is a beautiful Saturday here in Pennsylvania! We spent the morning selling our junk quality merchandise at a multi-family yard sale and did pretty well. Around $100 or so. Plus we had two LARGE mimosas, several jell-o shots and some magic cookie bars. Not a bad morning. Hope you are all doing well this morning (Critter, you ok, buddy?). And now, here's your weekend 'did you know's. Later gators!

Brigham Young University actually has Ballroom Dancing as a major.

Professional ballerinas use about twelve pairs of toe shoes per week.

The anteater, aardvark, spiny anteater (echidna), and scaly anteater (pangolin) are completely unrelated. The closest relatives to anteaters are sloths and armadillos. The closest relative to the spiny anteater is the platypus. The aardvark is in an order all by itself.

There are 336 dimples on a regulation golf ball.

The Beatles song "Martha My Dear" was written by Paul McCartney about his sheepdog Martha.

I know you all have heard songs but misunderstood the words, right? (There's a bathroom on the right, for example) Well, the word for mis-heard lyrics is 'mondegreen,' and it comes from a 50's folk song. The singer was actually singing "They slew the Earl of Morray and laid him on the green," but this came off sounding like 'They slew the Earl of Morray and Lady Mondegreen.'"

A walla-walla scene is one where extras pretend to be talking in the background -- when they say "walla-walla" it looks like they are actually talking.

The oldest exposed surface on earth is New Zealand's south island.

John Lennon's assassin was carrying a copy of "The Catcher in the Rye" when he shot the famous Beatle in 1980.

A game of pool is referred to as a "frame."

Impotence is legal grounds for divorce in 24 U.S. states.

The Declaration of Independence was written on hemp paper.

'Strengths' is the longest word in the English language with just one vowel.

'Stewardesses' is the longest word that is typed with only the left hand.

Steve Young, the ex-San Francisco 49ers quarterback, is the great-great-grandson of Mormon leader Brigham Young.

I've never done stewardesses with just my left hand. Nor can I type it that way.

OKay, what really scares me is I knew all the ones about BYU!

Posted by: drc at April 24, 2004 03:35 PM

A couple of comments. I knew the 'Catcher in the Rye' item because con-man Will Smith supposedly did his thesis on the influence of 'Catcher in the Rye' and its influence on America's youth. This was in movie the 'Six Degrees of Separation'.

My favorite mondegreen is
"Drive, drive, drive
to Uncle Stan's,
He's a magic man, momma,
He's got the magic hands"

really? Steve Young? Fo' Real? Weird. I've read a lot about Brigham young, and was a Joe Montana fan growing up, but I never stumbled upon that trivia. weird.

Magic cookie bars? I don't wanna know.

What the hell do you do with a degree in ballroom dancing? I mean, geez, we're definitely hard-up for some ballroom dancers who have their bachelor's in it.... Would that be a B.S.B.D? It's B.S. for sure!

I know someone who is buying the first round tonight. heh!

Seriously -- I should come to your yard sales. Jello shots?

A degree in Ballroom dancing from BYU, huh? I'm not surprised and you wouldn't be either if you'd ever lived in Utah as I did.

Did you guys sell your Cowboys jerseys ?

I spent the day at the NFL draft in NY.

Lots of fun hanging out with other FB fans across the country.

Posted by: MIKE at April 24, 2004 10:29 PM

MIKE, THAT WAS YOU ! ! I was watching the draft on ESPN, and when the Eagles traded up and got that offensive lineman from Arkansas, I thought I saw a big guy in a Steve Young jersey doing the Charleston in a corner of the room. Strangely enough, it all makes sense now. Cha cha cha ! !

PS Why even try to sell the Cowboys jerseys?
They oughtta just throw them out.

I think that the 'catcher in the Rye' bit is wierd. I really must re-read it.

Hey now lay off The Boys.... ;P Give 'em time. America's Team can't be perfect every season.

Didyaknow...that rabbits are more closely related to primates than rodents. That's right Rabbits are not rodents.

I did not know that, except I type Stewardesses with both hands. I'm weird that way.
