I'm having a bit of a reading dilemma. My problem is that I read too much. No wait, I don't read too much. I read too much at the same time. I seem to always be in the middle of three or four books. If the book that I want to read isn't in the room I'm in when the reading mood strikes, I'm apt to just pick up something new and start reading it.
This can get confusing when you pick up a half-read book and can't figure out what the hell they're talking about! And sometimes the books just don't mesh well.
For example, two of the books I'm reading right now are 'Holidays on Ice' by David Sedaris and 'Naked Lunch' by William S. Burroughs. I cannot imagine two books more dissimilar than these two and yet there I am, reading them both at the same time. I go from being pleasantly amused to being completely freaked out. Sometimes multiple times in the same day!
So anyway, what are you reading right now (I mean besides this post, ya goofball!)? Is it any good? Any recommendations for my next read(s)?
Posted by Buzz at February 18, 2004 09:12 AMDo you like satire? Terry Pratchett is hysterical. He is to Fantasy what Douglas Adams was to SciFi, only better. I've never laughed out loud while reading a book, but I'm constantly laughing when I read his.
Posted by: Alexia at February 18, 2004 09:20 AMIs it bad that I go from being pleasantly amused to being completely freaked out without reading? I'm currently reading:
- NFPA 415 - Standard on Airport Terminal Buildings, Fueling Ramp Drainage,
and Loading Walkways [just some light reading]
- The Da Vinci Code, by Dan Brown [because everyone else is]
- Everyman's Talmud, by Abraham Cohen [This seems to be a perpetual read]
- The River Why, James Duncan [this is my favorite book of all time]
I can't read more than one book at a time. That drives me nuts!lol.I just started reading...Angry Housewives Eating Bon-Bons...by Lorna Landvik.I haven't read enough yet to make a suggestion. We'll see.
Posted by: Emily at February 18, 2004 09:34 AMIf you're into Fantasy Lord of the Rings type books, A great series is the Wheel Of Time series by Robert Jordan. The books are actually alot better than Tolkien's books, and alot more interesting. I'm into those kinds of books more than anything else though, so I'm a wee biased.
Posted by: Angry Pete at February 18, 2004 09:34 AMYou already know what I'm reading - To Kill a Mockingbird - but I used to do the same thing as you. I was always reading at least two books at the same time. I find it much easier on my aging brain to keep it one at a time.
You know, since we have the paperback book shelves upstairs and that mainly hardback book shelves downstairs, you could always purchase whichever version you don't have and keep one on each floor...
Of course, that means that we'd have to go to the bookstore and I KNOW how much you simply hate that!! :)
Posted by: Empress at February 18, 2004 09:39 AMI just started Grisham's "Bleachers" last night. I grew up around that high school football fervor here in the midwest. It's a short book, so I should be done in a day or so.
I also just got Grisham's new book, "The Last Juror", for my birthday along with "The Zero Game" from my currently favorite author Brad Meltzer. Meltzer is similar to Grisham, but has a funnier edge to the writing.
I'm also in the middle of two Clancy books, but it's been a couple of months since I picked up either one. One of them is "Rainbow Six" and I honestly can't remember what the second one is.
If you haven't tried any of Meltzer's books, I STRONGLY recommend checking out "The Tenth Justice."
Happy Reading!
Posted by: Joe at February 18, 2004 09:42 AMI'm currently going through Dan Brown withdrawl. I tore through all of his books in no time because there were so good, and now nothing else is good enough. I'm reading Clive Cussler's Atlantis Found. So far it's good, but he's no Dan Brown.
Posted by: theresa at February 18, 2004 09:47 AMI'm reading a book called The Well of Loneliness by Radclyffe Hall (FYI a woman author). It's about a lesbian in 1920's England. I highly recommend it, it's fantastic.
Posted by: Cornelia at February 18, 2004 10:08 AMThe Devil Wears Prada by Lauren Weisberger
So far so good. I can really identify with the main character. I'm sure they'll make this one into a movie or something.
Posted by: Scott at February 18, 2004 10:17 AMWell I have nothing new to read at the moment so I am going through some of the older stuff that I havent read for lack of interest so right now I am reading Shock by Robin Cook. I have no idea if it is any good as I have just started and since it is old you probably already know anyway!
Posted by: Jeff A at February 18, 2004 10:29 AMi'm currently reading Live From New York, the story of the making of SNL. i'm only a little ways into it but i really like it so far. and i can't understand how you can read more than one book at once! i get addled enough as it is, without that kind of extra confusion in my life.
Posted by: P at February 18, 2004 10:42 AMI am finally finishing the lastest in the Harry Potter series - "Order of the Phoenix." Interesting, but I wouldn't recommend it unless you've read the preceding four. I'm definitely a one-book-at-a-time gal, and a really slow reader to boot!
Posted by: Erin at February 18, 2004 11:18 AMI'm currently working on a book called Naked Holidays. Ok, it's really not a book. It's a magazine. Ok, I'm not really reading it; it's mostly pictures. Ok, it’s not really called Naked Holidays. I was just trying to sound smart like you. I'll pass it along when I'm done.
Posted by: jjjjb at February 18, 2004 11:18 AMHey. I do that too. (And I just finished "Holidays on Ice"... Oh the hilarity.)
Right now I'm at the near end of "The Lost Continent", the middle of "The Elegant Universe", and somewhere in the beginning of some book that totally bored me to tears.
I'm reading "A Painted House" by John Grisham, "The Time-Traveler's Wife" by Audrey Niffenger and I'm about to start on "A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius" by Dave Eggars... I'm a little overwhelmed at the moment. Thankfully, I'm almost done with the Grisham.
Posted by: amber at February 18, 2004 11:44 AMHitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams.
"Don't panic!"
I have like 4 books I am reading right now. insane!!!
I like allconsuming.net. You can keep track of what you read, then add "friends" and see what they read, too, and get ideas. Oh wait, I see it on your sidebar. Well, anyway, you can see my favorites if you visit! :)
Posted by: Adelle at February 18, 2004 12:08 PMWow I have a hard enough time reading one book and you do multiple at once. I have never been a big reader. I would much rather watch the movie, I think its because I'm a slow reader.
Posted by: Tom at February 18, 2004 12:30 PMWell, at the moment, I am reading entertaining fluff, for the most part. But I can tell you about some of my favorite books, if you haven't already read them.
Blue Highways-William Least Heat Moon- go run and BUY it right now!
The Prophet-Kahlil Gibran-beautiful
To Kill a Mockingbird-yes I know it's already up there!
Letters From the Earth-Mark Twain-or anything else Mark Twain
Grapes of Wrath-yes, I'm sure most everyone has read it!
My Grandfather's Blessings-Rachel Naomi Remen-much wisdom!
The last book I read was The Five People you meet in Heaven-Mitch Albom. I enjoyed it very much. I also have enjoyed, don't laugh!, all of Oprah's recommendations that I have read. I think she has good taste. One I'm reading right now is A Lesson Before Dying-Ernest Gaines. So far, very good. Happy reading!!!!
I am STILL reading The DaVinci Code.
And about 4 other books.
I need bookworm intervention I think.
Posted by: Kathy Howe at February 18, 2004 01:23 PMI am just like you ... if I want to read and I don't have the book I am in the middle of right there, I will buy a new book and start on that. I am currently in progress with:
Prey by Michael Crighton
East of Eden by John Steinbeck
The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver
Harlots Ghost by Norman Mailer
A Short History of Nearly Everything by Bill Bryson
Under the Skin by Michel Faber
Not to mention I am totally behind in reading my Vanity Fair.
If only I had more time to read ...
Lisa
you know, i think i'm gonna print off these comments, as there are some great book suggestions in here. thanks everyone!
Posted by: P at February 18, 2004 02:12 PMI usually read 4 or more books at once, but then I started reading Anna Karenina, and I had to drop all the other books to finish it -- it was good, but VERY long. I'm currently reading The Two Towers -- an excellent book.
Posted by: 2flower at February 18, 2004 03:04 PMI just finished Harry Potter and the Goblets of Fire, and the Atkins diet book, now I'm fixin' to start Anne Rice's The Blood Canticle and/or The Five People you Meet in Heaven. Then, I'm gonna get the last Harry Potter and read that one..then the Time Traveler's Wife.. then Eragon..then one of the 50 I've got in the waiting pile. I think I need to win the Powerball next week, 215 million should give me plenty of time to read. : O)
Posted by: JaxVenus at February 18, 2004 03:12 PMAAaaaaggghhh! Go slower! I want to write this all down!
Well, Buzz, you've seen my nightstand (not in person, anyone, don't get your panties in a bunch), so you know I do the same thing.
I am perusing:
Designing with Web Standards, Jeffrey Zeldman
Complete Works of Shakespeare, Who Else
The Horse Whisperer, Can't Remember
Les Miserables, Victor Hugo
For fun, try anything by Bill Bryson, but most especially A Short History of Nearly Everything. It will give you Did You Know fodder for the next decade.
If you like fan fiction, try the Dark Materials series by Phillip Pullman. It's wonderful.
Also, try The Salterton Trilogy by Robertson Davies. If you like it, and you will, read everything else he's written. He's absolutely amazing.
Also, Life of Pi, A Secret History by Donna Tartt, I Don't know How She Does It, and almost anything by Barbara Kingsolver!
I'm a hardcore Anne Rice reader. There's only a few of her novels I haven't read. I also enjoyed a few international espionage novels by William Easterman, a few years ago. I have quite a few Clive Barker books on the shelf, too: Imagica, The Great and Secret Show, Everville.
On the conspiracy theory topic, I recently read "Rule by Secrets" by Jim Marr. He stretches a bit to make some connections, but it was an interesting read.
If you like the DaVinci Code, you might really enjoy Umberto Eco's novel "Focault's Pendulum" which is a fantastic read from the 1980's.
Another family trait. You're so much like your Mom!!
Posted by: cassie-b at February 18, 2004 04:23 PMThe worse "reading more than one book at the same time" experience I've had was reading The Regulators and Desperation. Actually, I started reading one then borrowed the other from the library. Since the one I borrowed, I only had for two weeks (there was a waiting list, couldn't renew it) I figured I'd read it first and stopped the other midway. Talk about confusing!
Anyway, as for what I'm reading now...I'm reading:
at work: "On the Street Where You Live" by Mary Higgins Clark
at home: "Practical Magic" by Alice Hoffman
I always have AT LEAST two books going, usually three. Right now I'm reading Lesbian Psychologies and Absolute Trust in the Goodness of the Earth by Alice Walker. I'm also working through True At First Light by Wally Lamb. Those three couldn't be any more different if they tried. Just depends on my mood which one I pick up.
Posted by: Kim at February 18, 2004 08:49 PMWhile I'd LOVE to sit down and read a good book, I'm wondering how anybody with kids does it. Between commute, work, kids, laundry, cooking, kids, family, coaching, cleaning, kids, working at kids' school, yardwork, homework, kids' activities, in-laws, kids, food shopping, etc, how do people make the time ?
Posted by: Willie's Buddy Jimmy at February 19, 2004 12:04 PMI doubt my reading would be choices you would make but I do have the problem of starting books before finishing the last book. Usually it stops at two though because I am OCD enough to need to finish, and will occasionally punish myself by not allowing myself another open book until the last is done, which can mean weeks will go by before I finally donate the book to a thrift store and pretend I never opened it. Anyway, I am trying to finish Zen and the Art of Knitting, which may have gotten published based solely on the fact that the author was the first one to submit the title idea. And I am rereading a childhood fave, Watership Down. About bunnies. But in some ways it resembles the sci fi/fantasy genre and is way more intelligent than I remembering being as a teen. (A lot of books I pick up from then are now over my head, scary!)
So there you have it. I have a bunch more books stuffed into a drawer waiting for me to finish or give away Zen/Knitting.
