OoooOOh, that smell.

As I enter into my forty-fourth year, I find myself starting to worry about things that I never worried about before. Right at the top of the list at the moment is odor. You know how, when you walk into an elderly person's house, you notice that "old person" smell? What is that? And more importantly, when does it start? Will I recognize it when it starts to happen to us? Should I start spraying the house with air freshener? Should I keep candles lit all the time? If I knew what caused it, I would be better able to combat it.

Oh lordy, I hope the smell isn't the early stages of human decomposition. Yuck!

I think you may have answered your own question in an earlier post.

"A British retiree did not notice his brother had been dead for 18 months despite sharing a mobile home with him.”

This poor guy couldn't smell his dead brother over his own stink. I'm buying stock in Yankee Candle. Burn 'em if ya got 'em, boys.

I think it starts next week.

Alright buzz I am going to give you some advice right now and stop you from making a dreadful mistake! That old person smell is a combination of: Air Freshener, potpouri, candles, and anything else they can find to try and make their home smell "better". Do not fall into the "I think my house smells funny" trap or you'll introduce the old person smell on your own!

By the way, put a lid on that damn bowl of hard candy, that doesn't help at all!

As long as your house smells like an opened beer, you're in the clear.

My beer smells like an unopened house. I'm not sure if I should be alarmed by that.

I hope you're not trying to tell me something!!

Ok, I'm 43 and I smell great but I have begun to notice some of that, "old man smell," on a relative I know. Aside from the obvious smells in old people's houses, i.e, mothballs, vitamins, room sprays, onions, garbage, and pets, I think the smell is from their not bathing, shampooing, or washing their clothes/bedding enough. If you've ever been stuck in line behind someone with dirty looking hair, you might have smelled that smell. Know what I mean? So folks, just remember that if you bathed and shampooed etc. everyday when you were young, YOU STILL NEED TO DO SO WHEN YOU'RE OLD!

When you begin to think you might have that smell, spill liquor. I mean, even if your house smells old, at least it also smells like liquor so everyone knows you'll be fun to hang with (old smell and all).

Either that or fart alot. Then no one will notice the old smell at all.

The smell is a result of medication and a decline in personal hygeine. Seriously, ever notice you have the worst smelling urine when you're on antibiotics or something?

Then there's the winning combination of stale coffee and creamed-salmon-on-toast farts to add into the mix.

Buzz,

I checked out Cassie-B's place.. no "old" smells there not even the odd "human decomposition odor"...

Rest assured, I think genetics are in your favor...

kat's right - meds do make certain odors. My grandparents had this smell - especially my grandmother. Combo of pee, meds and Jean Nate. It's just wrong...

"Old man smell" was discovered in 1987 by a Japanese scientist named Nakamura. It's caused by a substance called 2-nonenal and is found in the the bodies of (particularly strongest in men) men and women over age 40.
