Don't vote me off the blogosphere, please

This will be a very unpopular post.

I know that a lot of you folks, who I love and respect by the way, really enjoy watching reality shows. You eat ‘em up! I see a lot of posts talking about what Jane did to Bob or who got booted from where by which tribal council. Who fell in love with who but you think they’re just faking it to get the money. Subplots galore!

I gotta tell ya, I just don’t get it. Personally, I think a lot of these shows - Fear Factor, Big Brother, Blind Date, Models, The Mole, The Real World, Who Wants to Marry My Mom, etc., are societal embarrassments. I don’t think it speaks highly of us that these shows are continuously cranked out and we flock to see them. We, apparently, can’t get enough of them! And they sell us this tripe under the guise of “reality” shows. You do realize, don’t you, that these shows are not even close to reality, right?

It is such a no-brainer for stations like Fox. They can sit around, come up with some ridiculous scenario and pop out some god-awful, demoralizing, dehumanizing in-your-face-stupid (un)reality show. Ratings will skyrocket! Are we really that bored? I would love to place the blame on the networks, but , unfortunately cannot. They are just selling what the public wants to buy. The blame lies on us. And that’s unfortunate.

Anyway, that’s my little rant. Hope I haven’t offended you too much.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to go watch old reruns of Mork and Mindy.

Are you telling me the Real World isn't real? Thanks for destroying me so early in the mornin'. *runs away crying*

Yeah, an adult baby born from an egg~THAT show is much more realistic....;)

I only watch Survivor~and I'm not overly religious about it, but then again, I watch wrestling too. Please don't tell me THATS not real. =)

I agree with you (well, not about the Mork & Mindy thing). Reality shows are all about how nasty or rude you can be to another person, and then maybe when the show is over, you can have a layout in Playboy. JMHO

A frickin men brotha. You know, real world, was an original. I watched it more when I was younger, as it was more kind of a soap opera. Reality shows today all have a contest. People compete, get voted off, and there's a winner. It's all the same theme, just different scenarios. How can it be original?

Wahh, I want wonder years reruns.

THANK YOU! I will confess to having watched Survivor one full season and on occassion watch it again.... but when I do I'm always amazed at the people around me that "FORGET" we see one hour for every 170 hours they spend there.

LOL I think it is the therapist in me (have a degree in psych) that eats those shows up. Human nature is fascinating to me, I love to watch people and analyse them and pick them apart in my mind. What makes them tick? What drives people to behave the way that they do? Then again, I am a sicko that likes to watch people fall apart on national tv. lol

Reality shows have a way of bringing out the worst in people or the best in people. You see a side of that person that you probably would never see had they not signed up to starve for a month on a desert island or signed up to be locked away from the rest of the world with complete strangers for 3 months.

Then again, I could just be a loser who likes to watch mindless tv. LOL ;-)

Gotta give you the thumbs up on Mork and Mindy though- used to love that show as a kid!

Nanoo nanoo

I personally think reality television is the dumbing of America.. Hey people instead of turning on Fear Factor and sitting their like a rock, flip on the discovery or the history channel you may experience something called a thought.

Okay this is based off the FIRST survivor show:

Checking out the web site, they are only there for 39 days and we see 13 shows... this would be more like 936 hours (39*24 hours) and we see 13 hours of that time ..... That's giving us a real perception of reality! LOL

Thanks. You've just said out loud and in public what I've been thinking about for a couple of years. THAT's reality!

Posted by: Philip at July 16, 2003 11:19 AM

Reality tv is the bane of our existence. And it's not just an American thing. Reality shows permeate the air waves in Australia and the UK.

I mean, even PBS hosted a series?!?!?!!!!

I'm dying for the execs to wake up and calculate all the residual income they're losing by broadcasting these moronic shows. No one wants to see re-runs of the Bachelor.

I'll admit to catching the tail end to the first Survivor in 2000. And I was enthralled with the novelty of MTV's "Real World" a decade ago.

But Fox and NBC have taken things too far.

Pass me a Seinfeld re-run anyday!

I only watch Survivor, and that's mostly because the urchins watch it (I think they like feeling superior to adults) and I get a hoot out of watching them all justify acting like idiots.

You have to realize that Reality Series is a misnomer. Its just more catchy to say than "Lets cast people off the street who aren't in a union, pay them minimum wage, and tease them with the chance to win big bucks".

The reason I watch some of these shows is because there is nothing better on. You mentioned Mork and Mindy...I bet some of your readers weren't born yet when that show was on. It was an awesome show and there is very little on TV that compares to it. The Reality shows are a rebellion by the american people. We are saying that some bozos acting like asses are more entertaining than anything the TV writers can come up with. Its a sad state of affairs, but hopefully the result will be a rebound of good writing. Not next season...best show on TV right now is BBC's Coupling...so NBC buys it and is using the same scripts to make an Americanized version. Asshats...I'll stick to the BBC version and watch Survivor on Thursdays.

the only one i watch is Amazing Race. but to me, that one isn't the same as the other reality drivel. sure, AR has all the subplots of which team is screwing over who, but at least they're required to use their own skills to travel around the world.

Posted by: P at July 16, 2003 01:00 PM

One more thought...I think Blogs are the reality tv of the internet. People have realized that anyone can be entertaining or provide drama and we like it when its on a more personal level. Someone we can relate to and someone who is not reading a script written by a group of people who made a decision as to what they think we should find funny.

But... but.... *sigh*

I don't like all reality tv shows. I do have some standards. *harumph*

You started off talking about how this post was gonna be unpopular, and I was thinking it was gonna be much worse than reality tv.

Posted by: Erica at July 16, 2003 01:27 PM

Looks like David E. Kelly decided to speak out about this today too.

Posted by: Mala at July 16, 2003 02:19 PM

I think the last time I sat down to watch TV was in maybe February.

No offense taken here.

Posted by: Kathy Howe at July 16, 2003 02:36 PM

PBS actually had 3 reality shows that I know of (maybe more). Anyway, I'm sick of reality shows. At first I guess it was something different and I watched some of them. Most of them are ridiculous.

Posted by: Beavis at July 16, 2003 02:38 PM

I admit to watching them. I am not saying this is good TV... but there is little else on TV nowadays that piques my interest. Maybe I am a sheep to the masses but... some of it is entertianing. Its TV for chrissake... if I wanted to do something intellectual at night after work I would go read a book about the science of fruit flies.

Posted by: sphinx at July 16, 2003 02:41 PM

A-Men is correct... I still can't comprehend how so many people love this crap. *shrugs*

I'm just waiting for people to be publicly murdered or maimed for the sake of the viewing public, ala "The Running Man." It may sound a little ridiculous, but seeing how our society is now, I don't really see it as that far off.

Thank god for Star Trek and Simpsons re-runs... and oh yeah, TV Land. :)

Posted by: dave at July 16, 2003 04:01 PM

I'd go for Mork and Mindy any time

Posted by: Cassie-B at July 16, 2003 04:58 PM

not to show my age too much, but I remember when such "trash" tv was the stock only of January thru March of the year, to fill in between the end of the Christmas/football season and the beginning of spring sweeps/baseball/basketball season. These shows are popular, but the reason the networks keep cranking them out is because they maximize their profit. John alluded to the minimum wages networks get to pay NOT having to use union/known talent, and companies are climbing over one another to pony up the dough to sponsor them. Smart marketing on the networks' part? Uh-huh, you bet. Mind candy for the masses? You bet.

I guess I don't watch these shows because I have enough "reality" in my life - I don't need to watch it on tv. Give me good old-fashioned escapism to get what's left of my mind off of reality for a while.

Posted by: rickg at July 16, 2003 06:34 PM

So I take it you didn't pay 24.95 to watch the live stream of Big Brother? lol

Posted by: Lisa at July 16, 2003 10:45 PM

I admit I like Real World and (God don't ask me why) Surf girls . Most of the ones on Fox are annoying. I can't imagine why anyone would get offended just because you don't understand them.
