I was reading Michele's post regarding Led Zeppelin and it reminded me of something that has happened to me just recently. It is only within the last year or so that I "got" Janis Joplin. I have spent most of my life thinknig that she was just screaming out a bunch of overly loud crappola. Then one day it hit me. I don't know why or how but I do remember the song. It was "Piece of My Heart". And now I don't understand what took me so long to appreciate this woman. What power! What emotion! And what a tortured soul she was. Ok, I get it now. Sorry it took me so long.
Now if I can just do the same thing with Jimi.
Posted by Buzz at July 14, 2003 12:20 PMBuzz! No love for Jimi?!? Doh. Start with BB King...get the blues mojo happening with some great guitar. Then try spinning Jimi's Red House. I like his blues stuff best.
Funny thought...I was thinking that "spinning" a tune showed my age...but then I realized that cds spin..doh! showing my age again...then I realized that hard drives spin so the term is still valid....I'm such a dork...damn...I should blog this
Posted by: john at July 14, 2003 12:51 PMPiece of My Heart is one of the most powerful songs ever. Gives me chills every time.
Posted by: Michele at July 14, 2003 01:39 PMDude, Jimi's guitar style is so, well, so JIMI. He has influenced so many guitarists. I don't even know why I'm bothering to comment on this. You obviously don't get it.
Posted by: Beavis at July 14, 2003 05:12 PMWhewww... I thought it was just me. For lots of years I have been unmoved by Jimi's playing. I own his recordings and have listened to them ad nauseum. For quite awhile I figured it was another case of "The Emperor's New Clothes." It may sound heretical, but I haven't entirely rid myself of that opinion. Good? Definitely! Great? Hmmmm.
Posted by: Philip at July 14, 2003 07:20 PMI was the way Buzz was with Janis. When I was younger I thought Jimi was good, but I didn't think he was the greatest or anything like that. Though I now still don't think he was the greatest, I can hear so much more now that I didn't hear before. You can just hear one note from him and you know it's Jimi. It's not just that, but the way he plays. Oh well, each is entitled to his/her own opinion!
Posted by: Beavis at July 15, 2003 09:25 AMWhoo Hoo! 2 other people besides me who never understood the 2 of them. I still get odd looks from people when I tell them I don't get the fuss.
Posted by: Cornelia at July 15, 2003 12:43 PMI heard that Renee Zellweger (spelling?) is going to be playing Janis Joplin in an upcoming movie about life. She's not someone I'd picture in that role.
